The phrasing "prayers before faith" is an interesting one – before reading, my impression was that the author was saying, "prayers come before faith comes" or maybe "when faith is a flickering light, pray anyways because it may be that faith will be nourished." Thought-provoking read, thanks for sharing.

I had the same thought when I first read the poem, but was drawn back in time and again for the different ways it could be read, which you’ve noted. And actually it was the interpretations you called out that resonated most with me.
